Neuragen PN Product Information
The science behind Neuragen was discovered by Dr. Bruce Frome at the National Pain Institute and has been the subject of several clinical studies. Classed as GRAS by the FDA, Neuragen can be used to reduce discomfort resulting a range of medical conditions.
A print-ready product information sheet is available in PDF format.
History of Development
Dr. Bruce Frome discovered the effectiveness of certain botanical oils in the early 1990’s while managing the National Pain Institute
in California, a tertiary care center for patients with chronic
disabling pain. The clinic provided treatments of last resort for
patients with pain from diabetes, shingles, fibromyalgia, spinal compression, post-surgical and accident induced nerve damage,
and other conditions. Many of these patients were willing to serve as
subjects in his efforts to discover more effective analgesics for this
neuropathic pain.

In the initial studies, Dr. Frome
applied 200 essential oils, which are normally used in aromatherapy, to
patients suffering from these various neuralgias. They recorded the
degree of pain relief over a few hours in his office. Only specific
varieties and sources of these oils provided significant pain relief.
The pain relief was almost immediate and lasted for
several hours. Since that time, thousands of patients have used the
medication at a number of large chronic pain clinics in the US and
Canada, and this discovery has received a US patent. In August 2005, Neuragen was also registered as an over-the-counter drug by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Safety of Neuragen
The
botanical oils and its fractions used in Neuragen have been used in
foods and cosmetics for decades. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
considers these oils to be generally regarded as safe
(GRAS). The extensive clinical testing, the only detectable side effect
is minor skin irritation in a slight minority of patients with
sensitive skin. Please discontinue use if this occurs. There have been no reported adverse side effects when used according to directions. A flora aroma is pronounced due to the aromatic nature of the ingredients.
Development of NeuraGEL
NeuraGEL® has been developed in order to address requests for the same Neuragen effectiveness, but formulated as an easy to apply gel.
Neuragen Clinical Studies
Neuragen has been used extensively by health care professionals
in the USA and Canada since 1990 for the treatment of chronic pain
associated with diabetic neuropathy, shingles, fibromyalgia,
post-surgical and accident induced nerve damage and other related
conditions. Many patients have been successfully treated who have
failed to respond to other common treatments.
Clinical Trials
In 1992, the active ingredient in Neuragen was tested in a multicentre, monitored, placebo-controlled study
for safety and efficacy in the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia
(post-shingles pain). This is a chronic neuropathic pain condition
caused by an outbreak of shingles (Herpes zoster). The design applied
one treatment per day in a single-blinded, randomized, prospective,
balanced crossover study of five groups of six patients each (30
patients total). The trial was conducted at two centers: National Pain
Institute, CA and Pennington Research Institute, LA. The results are statistically significant, and showed that better than 3 out of 5 patients reported effective pain relief (Figure 1).
The active ingredients in Neuragen began relieving pain within 5 to 15
minutes and relief was still increasing at the end of one hour. Side
effects were minor and no different than mineral oil. Neuragen is a
safe and rapidly effective treatment for the pain of post-herpetic neuralgia.
In 2004, Neuragen was tested in a Sacramento, CA area study for the foot pain caused by diabetes
(diabetic peripheral neuropathy), and showed a similar high
effectiveness rate. Out of 29 patients, 69% noted some improvement in
pain. A remarkable 59% of these patients noting a 50-100% improvement
in pain (Figure 2 [PDF file]).
Quality of life benefits included improved joint flexibility and
balance and decreased cramping, as well as improvement in sleep, work
ability and energy. Many patients reported that Neuragen worked better
for them than any other medication. Repeated use of Neuragen decreased
levels of pain for some patients after only one month of use.
Clinical Use of Neuragen
Neuragen
has been used effectively in a clinical setting as the primary
prescriptive treatment, or adjunct treatment, by many health care
professionals for the following indications:
- Shingles (Herpes zoster)
- Post-Herpetic Neuralgia (Post-shingles pain)
- Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathies (Hand and foot pain)
- Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophies (RSD)
- Fibromyalgia
- Post-surgery or accident induced neuropathy
- Causalgias
- Radiculopathies
- Phantom Limb Pain
- Bell’s Palsy
- Trigeminal Neuralgias
- Mysofascial Pain
- Chemotherapy or HIV Neuropathic Pain
- Sciatica / Spinal Compression
We
recommend that you consult your health care professional about
combining Neuragen with your current treatment, or as your primary
treatment. Ask your health care professional to request the results of
these clinical studies.
